The Pensacola Ice Flyers (27-20-8) used offense from five different goal scorers and the second shutout of the season by goalie Matt Zenzola to defeat the Knoxville Ice Bears (28-20-7) by a score of 5-0 on Friday night inside the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.
The Ice Flyers opened the scoring when Josh Harris collected the puck, stickhandled around a defenseman and fired a quick shot that caught Knoxville goalie Dylan Wells off guard. Jeremy Gates had the only assist on the goal scored with 5:25 left in the first period.
Louis Belisle made it 2-0 Ice Flyers when he fought off tight coverage from an Ice Bears defenseman to redirect a pass from Massimo Lamacchia and put the puck past Wells. Lamacchia had the only assist on the goal scored 9:21 into the second. Lamacchia netted his own goal when he used the man covering him as a screen and ripped a puck towards the net with 4:35 left in the middle period. Evan Moore and Gates picked up the assists.
Rookie forward Stephen Hrehoriak stretched his goal scoring streak to three games when he made it 4-0 Ice Flyers when he put how a rebound of an Andrew Schmit shot. Hrehoriak collected the puck and fired a shot, the rebound found Schmit who fired an attempt of his own before Hrehoriak swung around the back of the net and put the rebound of Schmit’s attempt home. The goal was scored with 6:19 left in the third and Schmit had the only assist. Josh Cousineau took advantage of a Knoxville miscue when he grabs a misplayed puck and fired it into the back of the open net as Knoxville goalie Greg Dodds hadn’t made it back to his crease in time.
Zenzola stopped all of Knoxville’s 30 shots on goal to pick up his 17th win of the season.
The Ice Flyers will close out the 2016-17 regular season tomorrow as they once again take on the Knoxville Ice Bears inside the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central Time.
