Pensacola Loses in Shootout to Roanoke 5-4

PENSACOLA, Fla. (January 5, 2018) – Pensacola lost to Roanoke Friday night in a shootout. Ken Neil, Garrett Milan, Jessyko Bernard and Josh Cousineau scored for the Ice Flyers. John Gustafsson scored two goals for Roanoke. Daniel Vernace and Steve Mele also scored for Roanoke. Roanoke goalie Brad Barone finished the game after Matt Zenzola was pulled after giving up two goals on six shots. Pensacola goalie Gordon Defiel took the loss.
Pensacola took an early lead at 5:58 of the first period when Ken Neil scored his first goal of the season. The Ice Flyers added another goal four minutes later when Garrett Milan scored off a Jessyko Bernard pass. The goal was Milan’s sixth goal of the year. Roanoke pulled to within one when John Gustafsson scored with 1:17 left in the first period. Shots were 12-9 in favor of Pensacola.
Daniel Vernace tied the game for the Rail Yard Dawgs at 11:52 of the second period. Jessyko Bernard then gave Pensacola the lead back with his 14th goal of the season. Nathan Bruyere assisted on the goal. Steve Mele tied the game once more for Roanoke with a power play goal.
Josh Cousineau then put the Ice Flyers back on top with a goal at 3:42 of the third period. John Gustafsson tied the game for the final time almost four minutes later at 7:13 for Roanoke.
The game went into overtime, with neither team scoring, leading to a shootout. Roanoke won the shootout as Rail Yard Dawgs goalie Brad Barone stopped all four Ice Flyers shots. Pensacola goalie Gordon Defiel gave up two Roanoke shootout goals.
Notes:
This was the first game of a three game road trip for Pensacola. They face the Rail Yard Dawgs again tomorrow night, January 6 at 6:05 PM. They finish their trip by going to Birmingham, Alabama to face the Bulls on Tuesday, January 9. Puck drop at 7:35 PM.
