PENSACOLA, Fla. (October 5, 2017) – The Pensacola Ice Flyers have announced today that Head Coach Jeff Bes has signed american defenseman Anthony Calabrese for the 2017-18 season.
“Calabrese is a very mobile defenseman that has a high skill level and can produce from the back end but also play strong defense that could be seen in the playoffs en route to the 2016 SPHL championship,” Bes said.
“I am excited to come back and play at the Bay Center as it is always a great atmosphere to compete in,” Calabrese stated. “I cannot wait for the first game and am looking forward to returning to Pensacola to get back on the ice.”
The 5’9”, 165lb. defenseman is a native of Bridgetown, New Jersey. Calabrese attended college at SUNY-Plattsburgh, a NCAA Division III school. He netted 7 goals and 40 assists, totaling 47 points in 86 games during his college career. After his senior season, he joined the Ice Flyers and played an integral role during their 2015-16 playoffs run that culminated in winning the league championship. Calabrese led all defensemen in playoff scoring with one goal, five assists and a plus-8 rating in seven games. He will be making his return to the Ice Flyers this season after playing 12 games with the Norfolk Admirals in the ECHL prior to getting injured.
“We are looking for him to be in top form and contributing to our defense core night in and night out this season.” Bes mentioned.
“The fans, the noise and the energy in the Hangar is second to none,” Calabrese concluded. “It is great knowing the community and fan support for the team and that all makes it an extremely special place to play pro hockey in Pensacola.”
