PENSACOLA, Fla. (December 10, 2017) – The Pensacola Ice Flyers defeated the Birmingham Bulls in the first regular season matchup between the two teams. Birmingham scored first, and controlled much of the first period. However, the Ice Flyers scored two unanswered goals to ultimately win the game. Pensacola goalie Gordon Defiel shut down the Bulls offense, stopping 24 of 25 shots for his third consecutive win of the season. Bulls goalie Mavric Parks fought valiantly, stopping 50 of 52 Ice Flyers shots.
The Bulls took the lead 13:10 into the first period with a goal from Darius Cole, assisted by Evan Schultz and Keegan Bruce. The Bulls controlled much of the play in the first period until a late period push by the Ice Flyers. Pensacola narrowly outshot Birmingham 14-13 in the first period.
The Ice Flyers continued their push in the second period. Anthony Calabrese tied the game at 14:09 of the second period. Calabrese’s fourth goal of the season was assisted by Charlie Adams and Mark Bennett. The Ice Flyers outshot the Bulls 22-7 in the second period. The shot total was 36-20 Ice Flyers after two periods.
Charlie Adams would push the Ice Flyers ahead with a goal 36 second into the third period, his first goal of the season. The goal was unassisted, and would ultimately be the game winning goal. Pensacola’s defense came up big, only allowing Birmingham’s offense to muster five shots on goal in the deciding third period. Pensacola outshot Birmingham 16-5 in the third period and 52-25 for the game. The win ended the Bulls two-game winning streak. Pensacola earned its eleventh win, fourth in a row, of the season.
Charlie Adams had a goal and an assist in his second game back with the Ice Flyers. Adams now has one goal and three assists.
Anthony Calabrese has goals in back-to-back games.
The Ice Flyers next home game is Monday, December 11 at 7:05 PM against the Knoxville Ice Bears. The game is First Responders and Military Appreciation Night. There will be 35% off center ice tickets for first responders, military members, and their families. A valid ID must be shown at the Pensacola Bay Center Office when purchasing tickets. The Ice Flyers play this Friday, December 15, at 7:05 PM against the Evansville Thunderbolts. The game is Nashville Predators Night at the Hangar. Gnash, the Predators’ mascot, will be in attendance. Make sure to wear yellow for special contests and prizes!
