The Pensacola Ice Flyers (5-9-5) couldn’t complete a third period comeback and allowed two empty net goals as they fell to the Macon Mayhem (16-3-2) by a score of 4-1 on Tuesday night inside the Pensacola Bay Center.
The Mayhem got the first game of the game when former Ice Flyer Mark Rivera cashed in on the first half of a four-minute power play as Josh Cousineau was called for high-sticking. Macon doubled their lead exactly halfway through the period when Matt Johnson fired a shot from right wing boards that made it passed a screened John McLean.
After a scoreless second period, Riley Spraggs cut Macon’s lead down to 2-1 when he fired a wrister from the right faceoff circle with 7:01 left in regulation. Maxime St-Cyr and Louis Belisle picked up the assists. Pensacola took their timeout with 2:06 remaining and coming out of the timeout, head coach Kevin Hasselberg elected to pull McLean in favor of an extra attacked. The plan backfired, however, and the Mayhem’s John Siemer scored an empty net goal with 1:47 remaining. McLean remained on the bench following the goal and then Matt Johnson scored an unassisted, empty netter with 5.2 seconds remaining.
McLean stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced and the loss moved his record on the year to 2-2-0.
