Ice Flyers Lose Close Game 4-3 in Overtime

PENSACOLA, Fla. (December 30, 2017) – The Ice Flyers lost in overtime to the Macon Mayhem 4-3. Brandon Pfeil scored the game winner in overtime for Macon. Jessyko Bernard scored twice for Pensacola. Matt Johnson also scored for the Ice Flyers. Stathis Soumelidis scored twice for Macon. Seth Ronsberg also scored for the Mayhem.
Macon got on the board first with a goal at 7:11 of the first period by Seth Ronsberg, which was assisted by Ryan Salkfield and Kristaps Nimanis. Pensacola tied the game at 15:32 of the first period with a goal by Matt Johnson with an assist from Ken Neil. Macon regained the lead at 18:53 of the first period with a late power play goal by Stathis Soumelidis. He was assisted by Chris Izmirilian and Jake Trask.
Pensacola tied the game with a Jessyko Bernard power play goal at 4:09 of the second period. Robert Lepine and Kyle Haines assisted on the goal. Jessyko Bernard would give Pensacola the lead at 14:07 of the second period with his 13th goal of the season. Matt Johnson and Robert Lepine assisted on Bernard’s second goal of the game. Macon once more tied the game with a late second period goal by Stathis Soumelidis with assists from Chris Izmirilian and Jake Trask.
Neither team scored in the third period, sending the game into overtime. Macon won the game with a goal from Pfeil, assisted by Chris Izmirilian with 1:52 remaining.
The attendance at The Hangar was 5,163.
Gordon Defiel was loaned to ECHL Orlando. He became the 10th Ice Flyer call-up to the ECHL.
The Ice Flyers signed former Pensacola goalie John McLean as an emergency back-up goalie.
The Ice Flyers head out on the road for the next three games. They travel to Roanoke, Virginia to play the Rail Yard Dawgs on Friday, January 5 and Saturday, January 6. Puck drop is 6:05 PM on both days. The team then heads to Birmingham to play the Bulls on Tuesday, January 9 at 7:35 PM.
The Ice Flyers return home for a three-game weekend January 12-14. Friday, January 12 is Friends and Family Night at The Hangar. The Ice Flyers play the Birmingham Bulls at 7:05 PM. The Ice Flyers are offering a special ticket package for that game only. The Ice Flyers play the Bulls again the next day, Saturday, January 13 on Mardi Gras Night at The Hangar. Laissez les bon temps rouler! Be ready to catch some beads during the Mardi Gras Parade on Ice.
