The Pensacola Ice Flyers (21-19-8) fell to the Mississippi RiverKings (28-19-2) by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night in front of 4,647 fans inside the Pensacola Bay Center.
The Ice Flyers opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 4:50 into the first period. Mississippi tied the game up at one when Mike Moran cashed in with a power play goal with 8:42 left in the first.
Mississippi took their first lead of the game when Ryan Marcuz beat Ice Flyers goalie Matt Zenzola just 35 seconds into the second period. Andrew Schmit would tie the game up for the Ice Flyers a little over a minute later. Roger Tagoona and Josh Harris assisted on the goal that came 1:50 into the second. The Ice Flyers regained the lead when Brandon Wahlin scored his first goal as an Ice Flyer on a redirected shot that was initially fired by Nathan Bruyere. That goal was scored with 15:04 left in the second and Massimo Lamacchia had the secondary assist. Nearly 10 minutes later, the RiverKings once again tied the game with a power play goal. This one was scored with 6:15 left in the frame on a shot from the blueline by Joe Sova.
Moran scored his second of the game 4:48 into the third period to give Mississippi a 4-3 lead and put the pressure back on to the Ice Flyers. Despite pulling Zenzola late in the third, the Ice Flyers were unable to score the tying goal.
Zenzola stopped 25 of Mississippi’s 29 shots on goal as his record fell to 13-10-7 on the season.
The Ice Flyers will be back in action tomorrow, March 19, as they take on the Columbus Cottonmouths for Military Appreciation Night.
