The Ice Flyers began their the second straight road weekend in Evansville Thursday night as they travelled to southern Indiana for the first and only time this season. After outshooting the Bolts 38-30, it took an overtime goal by the Ice Flyers Garrrett Milan to give the Ice Flyers two points for the victory.
Rookie Brett D’Andrea opened the scoring for the Ice Flyers near the end of the first period, with Milan and Jesse Kessler collecting assists on the goal. D’Andrea and Milan connected on another goal as they set up defenseman Nathan Bruyere on the power play to put the Ice Flyers’ lead to 2-0 8:02 into the second. The Thunderbolts came right back with a goal by former Ice Flyer Shane Morrissey just 1:41 after Bruyere’s tally. Thunderbolt captain, Rory Rawlyk, tied the game with 1:33 left in the second period after joining the rush on a play set up by Eric Salzillo and Evan Schultz.
Evansville continued to put the pressure on Pensacola as they scored their third straight goal to lead 3-2 2:20 into the final frame with a goal from Carter Shinkaruk. However, the Ice Flyers were not finished. Newcomer Gavin Yates scored his first goal in an Ice Flyers jersey with 6:55 remaining in regulation.
The game went into overtime, and it was Milan and D’Andrea once again to provide the offence. Milan made an end-to-end rush about half way through the 3-on-3 overtime period, made a move on the Thunderbolts’ defenseman and beat their goalie with a quick backhand. The Ice Flyers skated off with a 4-3 overtime victory.
Pensacola went 1-3 on the powerplay, while Evansville went 0-4. The two teams square off Friday night before Pensacola heads to Huntsville to finish their weekend.
