Banfield Heats up as Ice Flyers Tame Mayhem 4-1
The Pensacola Ice Flyers got back in the win column with Saturday night’s 4-1 win over the Macon Mayhem in the Ice Flyers’ first ever visit to the Macon Coliseum.
Macon’s Daniel Gentzler got the Mayhem on the board early with a goal that beat Matt Zenzola just 2:39 into the game. Corey Banfield scored his second goal of the season, this one assisted by Adam Pawlick and Joey Holka, to tie the game with 7:23 left in the opening period. Pensacola took the 2-1 lead thanks to a power play goal by Joe Caveney. Jeremy Gates and Nick McParland had the helpers on the goal that came with 1:42 left in the first.
Banfield netted his second of the night to put the Ice Flyers up 3-1 with 7:55 left in the second period. Holka and Ryan Kesti picked up the assists. Banfield completed the hat trick with an unassisted, empty net goal that came with seven seconds remaining.
Zenzola stopped 28 of the 29 shots Macon put on net to secure the win and push his record on the season to 5-1-0. The Ice Flyers swept the Three Stars with Kesti being named the third star, Zenzola second, and Banfield’s hat trick earning him the number one star.
