Ice Flyers dominate IceGators 5-2
The Pensacola Ice Flyers (9-6-1) came out focused for their only game on the weekend and defeated the Louisiana IceGators (6-8-2) by a score of 5-2 on Saturday night.
The IceGators opened the scoring just 2:24 into the game when Geordie Wudrick first a shot that beat the Ice Flyers’ John McLean. That lead lasted almost seven minutes until Corey Banfield notched a power play goal with 11:52 left in the first period. Adam Pawlick and Mike Krieg assisted on Banfield’s 10th goal of the season and fourth with the man advantage.
After the first ended 1-1, Pensacola’s Clewlow scored his first goal in an Ice Flyers’ uniform just 2:29 into the period to give the Ice Flyers the lead. Banfield had the lone assist. Just over four minutes later, Clewlow scored his second goal of the season and second of the period to make it 3-1. Stephen Buco and Krieg were credited with the helpers. The Pensacola power play found success again when Joe Caveney scored with 9:32 left in the middle period to push the score to 4-1. Jeremy Gates and Buco assisted on the tally.
Pensacola’s lead stretched to 5-1 when Steve Bergin scored a 5-on-3 power play goal with Louisiana’s Anthony Pisano and Mike Kavanagh both in the box. Gates and Krieg assisted on the goal scored with 6:35 remaining in the third. The IceGators attempted to mount a comeback and found a little success after the pulled goalie Alex Vazzano in favor of an extra attacker. Benjamin Rubin scored with 2:18 left while the Gators had a 6-on-4 manpower advantage with Buco in the box for high sticking.
McLean stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced and earned the win in his first start of the season. Pensacola swept the three stars with Banfield being named the third star, McLean the second, and Clewlow the number one star.
The Ice Flyers will be back in action next Friday, Dec. 18, when they welcome these same IceGators into the Pensacola Bay Center for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff. It will be Christmas Extravaganza Night inside the Hangar.
