Havoc Comeback to Down Ice Flyers 3-2 in Shootout
The Pensacola Ice Flyers (6-3-1, 13 pts.) were unable to complete the weekend sweep but still managed to leave Huntsville with three out of four possible points following Saturday night’s 3-2 shootout loss at the hands of the Huntsville Havoc (6-4-0, 12 pts.).
Corey Banfield opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season 8:44 into the first. Adam Pawlick had the lone assist on the goal. After over 26 minutes of scoreless action, the Havoc were able to tie the game at one thanks to the second goal of the season by Jeremy Beirnes that came with 4:05 left in the second. That’s where the scoring stood when the second period ended.
There was another long scoreless stretch before Joe Caveney cashed in with a power play goal assisted by Jeremy Gates to put Pensacola up 2-1 with 5:09 left in the third. The Havoc tied the game up again just 1:40 later when Nolan Kaiser beat Ice Flyers goalie Matt Zenzola. After finishing regulation and the five-minute overtime period, the two teams headed to a shootout. All four shooters Ice Flyers failed to score while Jackson Brewer and Justin Tateson scored for Huntsville.
Zenzola stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced and stopped two of the four shooters he faced in the shootout. He now stands with a 6-1-1 record.
The Ice Flyers are back in the Pensacola Bay Center this Wednesday, Nov. 25, as they welcome the Louisiana IceGators into the Hangar for their Thanksgiving game. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Central.
