The Pensacola Ice Flyers (14-15-6) used another strong night on the power play to down the visiting Peoria Rivermen (18-9-7) by a score of 5-3 on Saturday night inside the Pensacola Bay Center.
The Ice Flyers dominated the first period of play and capitalized on Peoria’s mistakes. When Dave Pszenyczny got a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding, Nathan Bruyere fired a shot from the right side that found twine with 6:46 left in the first. Louis Belisle had the lone assist on the goal. When former Ice Flyer Cody Dion earned himself a five-minute major and game misconduct for elbowing, Bruyere cashed in again just seven seconds after the penalty. Andrew Schmit and Aaron Clarke assisted on the goal that came with 6:19 remaining in the opening period.
The Ice Flyers made it a 3-0 lead when Josh Cousineau batted in his own rebound 4:37 into the second period. Belisle had the only assist on the goal. Peoria fought back and made it 3-2 with a couple of power play goals by Connor Gorman 5:50 into the period and Justin Hoomaian with 3:06 left in the frame. Pensacola regained the two-goal lead when Patrick Megannety scored with only 2:15 left in the period to make it 4-2. Belisle and Cousineau assisted on Megannety’s seventh goal of the season.
Peoria cut the Ice Flyers’ lead back down to one goal when Gorman scored his second of the game with 9:51 remaining in the third. The game remained a 4-3 affair until Patrick Megannety scooped up the puck behind the empty Peoria net, wrapped around, and backhanded it into the net with 1:07 left in the game. Bruyere had the lone assist on Megannety’s fourth goal in two nights.
Matt Zenzola stopped 21 of Peoria’s 24 shots to push his season record to 10-7-5.
The Ice Flyers will close out the weekend when they again face the Rivermen on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. It will be the Ice Flyers’ annual Scout Night.
